USFS Basic Skating Skills Topics - Group 1 The badge levels of ISI skaters were used as a starting point to determine the equivalent Basic Skating Skill level for placement in workshops. Equivalent Badge Chart The ISI and Basic Skills group class programs are very similar, but not identical as elements are introduced at slightly different points in each of the instructional programs. The use of the conversion chart is a helpful indication of skills which instructors can use to base the initial placement of skaters in class levels. On the first class day, instructors can use an on-ice Pre-Test to more precisely place each skater into their proper class level. If a rink has not had a figure skating program established long enough to have sufficient skaters to support a stand alone MITF workshop for USFS skaters, it makes economic sense to also include Basic Skills workshop classes. Mixing the two small groups of skaters into one, larger "Combined Workshop Program" allows a club to offer a summer workshop series that otherwise would not be economically viable. The more experienced USFS skaters serve as a role model for the beginning skaters. This positive learning environment also provides an incentive for the beginning skaters to strive to achieve a higher level of skill development then they would otherwise possibly imagine.
